Woman has five stone cyst removed in life-saving operation

Details have emerged of a life-saving operation carried out last year in Mexico, in which a 24-year-old woman had a cyst weighing over five stones (33kg) removed from her body.

The unnamed woman was having at risk of heart failure as a result of the engorged ovarian cyst, which left her with limited mobility and problems breathing and eating.

The woman is now able to live a normal life after the growth was removed at Mexico General Hospital by Dr. Erik Hanson Viana.

“This is the biggest cyst I have operated on," said Dr Viana. "It was so large that it took up 95 percent of the patient’s abdomen.

“It’s really rare to operate on a cyst this big, it measured half a metre in diameter and the circumference was 157 cm.

“From all the research I’ve found, it’s believed that this is the largest ovarian cyst ever to be removed whole, without draining it first or spilling it.”

According to Dr Viana, if the woman had not been operated on she would have become increasingly immobile and malnourished - but after the cyst was removed, she had a new lease of life.

"'Two days after surgery she walked out of hospital. Before she was used to carrying 73 lb (33kg) inside her because of the cyst, so movement was like she was levitating or walking on the moon," he said.

"When we saw her six months after surgery to see how the scar was healing and monitor for other problems, she was fully healed. She was standing completely straight.

"She now walks like a normal person without needing a walking stick or other mobility aids and her abdomen is now flat."

Are women comfortable taking their clothes off in front of a male doctor or gynaecologist?

They don’t exactly ask us to strip u know, they tell us how to prepare for examination and then leave the room for 2 mins. We lie down and lose just the bottom and undies and put the sheet which they give us over our legs and spread them for doctors to examine. I know that the doctor’s going to look and maybe even touch the vagina ultimately so why bother putting on a sheet and stuff, well idk but it is more comfortable like that. I usually prefer female doctors but i have been examined by males too quite a few times.

What’s something you haven’t told anyone until today?

Once I went to the beach with my college friends. I could not swim so I was sitting outside and watching the rest of the people playing in the water. Then a friend of mine came and grabbed me by the hand and pulled me away. Despite my refusal, he poured water on me and said don't swim, you can come here and sit. I then sat on the middle shore and started playing a little with those people. During all this, it came out of my mind that I am wearing a white top with only samiz under it. After a while my fate was something like this - When the rest of my friends later told me that everything was visible, which was like a loss of my life. Since that day, I have decided that no matter what happens, I will never wear white.
