Then a friend of mine came and grabbed me by the hand and pulled me away. Despite my refusal, he poured water on me and said don't swim, you can come here and sit.   While I’ve historically harped on modern war films for this sin, today I’ll choose Isabella of France in Braveheart. While modern war films might absurdly cast actors in their 30s, 40s and 50s to play characters in their late-teens to mid-20s, this one is a doozy. The real life Isabella was born on an unknown date in 1295. William Wallace, for those who don’t know, was executed in August, 1305. The simple math says she was between nine and ten years old when Wallace died. So casting a then 28 year old Sophie Marceau to play her is the absolute height of lunacy. Of course, we can’t place the blame for this on the casting department. The utterly fact-challenged screenplay includes Isabella as a character to begin with, even though she didn’t arrive in England until age twelve, two years after Wallace’s death.   This is the exact same thing that happened to my mom. One time my mom and I were travelling from Singapore to India, if I'm not wrong in a Tiger Airways flight.   Children were sometimes forced to kneel on dry peas. This was common around the time of the world wars, including in Germany. It was meant to break children’s will. Some punishments used by teachers were extremely cruel. There is even a real photo of a girl who recently experienced this punishment at school. The photo shows her knees, not her fingers, even though it may look that way. Today, this kind of punishment still exists in some parts of China and the Philippines. Another punishment was called “the paws.” This meant hitting a child’s outstretched hand. It was not fully banned until 1980.
